Lent at St. Francis of Assisi ADVENT What is Advent? Read More Beginning the Church's liturgical year, Advent (from, "ad-venire" in Latin or "to come to") is the season encompassing the four Sundays (and weekdays) leading up to the celebration of Christmas. As with most things in the Church, there is a lot that goes into Advent. There's lots of symbolism, traditions, imagery, customs, prayers, and more. It can get confusing, especially if you're new to the Church, or if you're just trying to learn more about the meanings. Here, we will break down some of the major points of the Advent season, and include some more in-depth resources for you. Where does Advent "come from"? Although not mentioned explicitly in the Bible, Advent is inspired by Scripture. The word Advent comes from the Latin word "adventus", meaning arrival. The season of Advent serves as a reminder of our anticipation, a sacred season that invites believers to prepare their hearts for the coming of Christ. Celebrated in the weeks leading up to Christmas, Advent serves as a reminder of both Christ’s first coming—His birth in Bethlehem—and His promised return. What do the Sundays mean? Each Sunday has a different meaning and "theme" to go with it. As we move through the weeks, we also continue to light the Advent wreath, which also has a special meaning. The First Sunday reoresents Hope, the second Sunday Peace, the third Sunday is Joy, and the fourth Sunday is Love. What is the meaning of an Advent Wreath? There are many symbols within the Advent Wreath. The tradition of the wreath itself is decades old, and can be traced back to Germany. Below are some of the components of an advent wreath and their meanings: - the wreath is arranged in a circle because like a circle, God has no beginning or end, and it is infinite, like God's love for us - candles representing that Jesus is the Light of the World, the Light of the darkness in winter - purple candles for royalty, repentance, anticipation - pink candle for joy - evergreen in the wreath, a plant that lives through the winter when all else dies, because God's love is everlasting - red holly in the wreath for the blood of Christ - pointy leaves to remind us of the crown of thorns Each candle also represents something different. The first candle lit, on the First Sunday of Advent is the Prophecy Candle. Second Candle is the Bethlehem Candle, the Third Candle is the Shepherd's Candle, and the Fourth Candle is the Angel's Candle. For more information on Advent Wreaths and their meaning, click here .
