  • Liturgical Ministries | Saint Francis of Assisi

Interested in learning about what Ministries we have to offer here at Saint Francis of Assisi? LITURGICAL MINISTRIES ALTAR SERVERS Altar Servers assist the Priest at Mass and other liturgical and devotional celebrations throughout the year. Servers are scheduled for weekend liturgies as well as weddings, funerals, and daily Mass. Male and female students in grades 4 through 12 are welcome to serve. New altar server training is offered in February before Lent. Contact: 610-272-0402. CATECHISTS The role of a Catechist is to echo Christ. Catechists are instructors who work with the Pastor, Religious Education Moderator, & parents to help educate, form, and enlighten the youth of St. Francis of Assisi in faith, morals and charity, as well as to foster the Gospel teachings in a safe environment for all children. Who can be a catechist? Since the role of a catechist is a ministry in which one teaches by example as well as knowledge, a catechist must be an active participating member of the church community and living a sacramental life according to the church norms. Ongoing formation is a must, and is provided through the Archdiocese, so a catechist must be someone who desires to learn and grow personally in faith. All catechists will need to take Safe Environment classes and have background checks for the safety of all children. We are always looking for men and women to become catechists for the youth of St. Francis of Assisi. Training is available! If you would like to learn more about becoming a catechist, a co-teacher, or a volunteer in Religious Education, please contact Lauren Kibler in the rectory at 610-272-0402 for more information. CHOIR AND CANTORS Ministers of music lead the congregation in song, either by singing as a cantor or in a choir. Cantors lead the congregation during Mass. Practices are usually once a week. Musical proficiency is required, but a person need not be a virtuoso or a professional. Contact: Michael Maresca 610-539-7597 EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS Extraordinary Ministers assist the priest and serve the faith community by distributing the consecrated bread and/or wine to parishioners during Mass. Training is required before becoming an Extraordinary Minister. You may choose your Mass time. Contact: Mary Anders 610-635-9476. LECTORS Ministers of God’s Word proclaim the two readings before the Gospel as well as the Intercessions at weekend Masses and on other important occasions. Lectors prepare for the readings ahead of time and should arrive fifteen minutes prior to Mass. You may choose your Mass time and commitment as long as you desire. Anyone from high school age and older who is fully initiated in the Catholic Church may participate. Contact: Mary Anders 610-635-9476.

New to Saint Francis of Assisi or the Catholic Church? Start here! WELCOME TO SFA! First and foremost: welcome! Whether you're new to Saint Francis or new to the Catholic Faith, we welcome you with open arms and hearts. Coming to a new church can be overwhelming, and we want you to feel completely comfortable when you visit. Below are some common and frequently asked questions. If you have any other questions, feel free to contact us. For information on Mass etiquette, click here . When are Masses? Weekend Masses Saturday Vigil: 5:30 PM Sunday: 7 AM; 9 AM (Spanish); 11:30 AM Weekday Masses Monday: 8:30 AM Tuesday: 8:30 AM Wednesday: NO MASS Thursday: 8:30 AM Friday: 8:30 AM Saturday: 8:30 AM When is Confession? The Sacrament of Reconciliation is available on Saturdays, after the 8:30 daily Mass, and again between 4 - 5 PM. I'm not Catholic...can I still receive Holy Communion? In short, no. Communion, or The Eucharist, is the most intimate expression of our faith. Catholics believe that the host is literally the body of Christ, transformed from bread by the priest presiding over the service. Most evangelicals think of Communion as symbolic, so it makes sense that they are not as strict about having the right relationship to it as Catholics and Orthodox Christians who believe it is a sacrament and the true presence of Christ. So, if you are not Catholic, we ask that you not receive communion. How do I become a member of Saint Francis? We're so glad to hear you want to join Saint Francis Parish! Father Smith, our pastor, likes to personally register new parishioners, so that he can meet and get to know you all. To register, please contact our Parish Center and make an appointment to register as a new parishioner. I'm not Catholic, and I don't know much about the Church. That's okay! We're here to help. Becoming Catholic today means joining an ancient faith, deeply rooted in the teachings and traditions of Christ, while continuing to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ across the Globe. We have many resources available to help you, including RCIA for those ready to join the Church. If you want to learn more about the Catholic Church and our beautiful faith, contact us! For some good resources on learning about the Church, click here . No matter what, we want you to feel welcome when visiting us here at Saint Francis. We have parking in our lot, which you can enter from Hamilton Street. Street parking is also available. We have handicapped parking spaces, as well as a ramp to get into the Church. Important information about the Blue Mass for Law Enforcement at SFA. Blue Mass What: A special Mass for all Law Enforcement Officers in the Norristown Area When: Saturday, September 27, 2025, 5:30 PM Where: Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church; 601 Buttonwood St. Norristown, PA 19401 What is a "Blue Mass"? A Blue Mass is a Mass celebrated annually in the Catholic Church for those employed in the public safety field (i.e. police officers, firefighters, correctional officers, 911 operators and EMS personnel). The color blue relates to the blue-colored uniforms predominantly used by these services. Read more about the history here . Who can come? All are welcome! We invite all to join us in honoring and praying for our local law enforcement, especially our local first responders themselves. Parking We have an upper and lower parking lot, accessible from Hamilton and Oak Streets. There is also street parking available on Hamilton, Marshall, and Buttonwood Streets. There is limited handicapped parking available in our parkin lots, as well as a handicapped-accessible ramp from the upper parking lot. Vehicle Blessings If you would like your police vehicle blessed, Father Smith will be blessing police vehicles and items after the Mass. Find him in the parking lot after Mass. Who is Saint Michael the Archangel, and what is his connection to Law Enforcement? Saint Michael the Archangel is known as the Patron Saint of Police Officers and Law Enforcement, as well as all First Responders. Saint Michael is honored as the angel who fought for God against Satan, and has since remained a strong symbol of toughness, resilience, bravery, and more. Similarly, our first responders often face dangerous and difficult situations in their line of duty, and so look to St. Michael for guidance, strength, and protection. • Anointing of the Sick | Saint Francis of Assisi

Learn about Anointing of the Sick at Saint Francis of Assisi "They Cast Out Many Demons, And Anointed With Oil Many Who Were Sick And Cured Them." - Mark 6:13 ANOINTING OF THE SICK When the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is given, the hoped-for effect is that, if it be God's will, the person be physically healed of illness. But even if there is no physical healing, the primary effect of the Sacrament is a spiritual healing by which the sick person receives the Holy Spirit's gift of peace and courage to deal with the difficulties that accompany serious illness or the frailty of old age. Pastoral care for Catholic patients in area hospitals is shared by the local parishes. If you or a loved one are admitted to a hospital, please inform the hospital administration that you are a Catholic so that you will receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick and Holy Communion. Holy Communion is brought on a monthly basis to the homes of elderly and ill parishioners who are unable to attend Mass. Please notify the Rectory to arrange a visit.

  • Holy Matrimony | Saint Francis Of Assisi Roman Catholic Church | Norristown

Getting Married? Congrats! Visit our page to find out what steps to take to have your wedding here at St. Francis! “Therefore A Man Leaves His Father And Mother And Clings To His Wife, And They Become One Flesh. " - Genesis 2:24 HOLY MATRIMONY What is marriage? As defined in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, "Marriage is a lifelong partnership of the whole of life, of mutual and exclusive fidelity, established by mutual consent between one man and one woman, and ordered towards the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of offspring." Engaged Couples Congratulations on your engagement! Couples contemplating marriage are requested to notify the rectory and make an appointment with the Pastor. Arrangements should be made at least six (6) months before the desired wedding date. Additionally, all couples need to take a Marriage Preparation class held by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. You can register for the class by clicking here. Bring your civil marriage into the Church (Convalidation) Did you know that Church Canon Law requires all Catholics to marry in the Catholic Church in order for the marriage to be recognized as valid in the Church? If you married outside of the Catholic Church and wish to have your marriage recognized, the Church offers a way for you to bring your marriage into "good standing" with the Church through something called "convalidation". It's not a vague blessing of your civil union, but rather the celebration of the Sacrament of Matrimony in the Catholic Church, a new consent. It's not a difficult or lengthy process, and all that's needed at the Rite is the couple, the celebrant, and two witnesses to your vows. Bringing your marriage into the Catholic Church is important, as seen in the priest's potential directive to refrain from receiving Holy Communion until you do so. Please contact the Rectory or Father Smith to learn more. Divorce and Remarriage We pray you won't find yourself in a marriage that ends in divorce, but sometimes sadly, it happens, If you do find yourself in this situation, and wish to remarry, here are some things you'll need to know: to marry in the Catholic Church - as a Catholic is called to do - both parties (even if one is not Catholic) must be free to marry. This means that this must be a first marriage, or a former spouse is deceased, or prior marriage/s have received a Declaration of Nullity from the Tribunal. To learn more about your situation, or to inquire further about how to obtain an Annulment, please contact the Metropolitan Tribunal for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia at 215-587-3750.
